What a grind actually is

The grind is the shape of the sole: how much metal is removed from the heel, toe and trailing edge, and where. Grinding changes three things. Bounce angle. This is the angle between the leading edge and the lowest point of the sole. More bounce keeps the leading edge from digging in. Less bounce lets it slide under the ball on tight lies. Sole width. A wide sole spreads the club's weight over more turf and resists digging. A narrow sole cuts through and gives you more control. Relief. Taking metal off the heel, toe or trailing edge lets you open the face without the leading edge lifting high off the ground. That's what lets a good player hit a flop off a tight lie with the same club they use for a full shot.
